I think that the total asynchronous mode of teaching is not useful for most part of students. Discipline, teamwork, competition - all these are integral attributes of synchronous classes that motivate students to improve their knowledge. Perhaps the best solution is a mixed way of teaching.

We agree with Your thoughts...but it is difficult when a professor has a Lot of subjects and must redesign them totally...

Anastasia Chakir Student
2022 Feb 8 | 15:53

You don't have to redesign all courses, all subjects completely. Maybe in your case synchronous format is exactly what makes the course special. Maybe you only need to add some interactivity to make your course more dynamic. Maybe you understand that in-class time can be used more effective and thus theory should go to asynchronous part. Or maybe your course has a great potential for commercialization and it is wise to create a MOOC (massive online course). A lot of maybes, a lot of options and only you as a professor, instructor, teacher knows what is best works for you.
But why not try something new ;)

Thank you so much for your inspiration! I am already inspired, motivated and ready to redesign all my courses and trainings from synchronous to asynchronous, impatiently waiting for all videos and materials to take a new luggage of knowledge and skills to make it happen!

Thank you very much for the pivotal interesting video, where you explained the importance of the synchronous and asynchronous teaching process.

I suppose we are on the same stage because according to the many universities experience, there are many educational environments where both methods are used, more importantly, during the COVID-19 pandemic situations, we as the teachers have clearly seen how the synchronous and asynchronous teaching process are crucial for the student's development.

I can argue that the E-learning process is very known as learning and teaching through the Internet and network technologies, which is perhaps one of the most powerful responses to the growing need for education and stands higher. However, there are many reasons why you should learn in synchronous and asynchronous learning, the online learning environment is becoming more routine in teaching and learning than ever before.

According to the many pieces of research, technologies related to synchronous and asynchronous, thus we can improve the quality of student-teacher interactions in the online classroom. To increase student engagement, and improve learning outcomes as well. Consequently, I desire to use both methods within my classes, because these methods can enrich students' products and portfolios as well, student-teacher collaboration, and student-specific pauses tailored to individual student needs.

Thanks a lot again for creating and offering the learning opportunity.

I myself value both types of teaching. However, with students the task can look many-sided and sometimes complex.

In terms of advantages, asynchronous teaching increases autonomy and is perfect for highly motivated, self-motivated and ambitious students. It also builds self-confidence, supports self reflection among students with low self-esteem, less confident and shy personalities who prefer to communicate with people through digital platforms.

However, lack of personal communication can truly create some mode of loneliness and isolation and sound a little less involving and challenging for students with loose and undefined plans and interests.

Truly, there is a lot to learn about the best practices of synchronous and asynchronous teaching techniques.

Ana, you are right both types of teaching have prons and cons. So sometimes it is better to find a balance between them, then fully lean to one or the other side.
If you combine different types of teaching, bring new tools and technologies to the class, it is recommended to go through it with your students for the first time. Show them how it works, describe what they can do, think or how they can react or communicate.

Thank you very much for informative video. I think that both methods can have pros and cons. Although using asynchronous teaching is much more flexible and informative , using synchronous teaching in remote settings is a great approach to help create and sustain a sense of community in a virtual space. Using synchronous methods helps when working through difficult or tricky topics as we are able to respond to students in real time with questions to help clarify any issues that may arise. Due to the current COVID-19 world health crisis, our students are dealing with internal and external pressures that may affect their ability to feel as though they are part of a learning community as they would in traditional in-person delivery. Employing synchronous teaching methods will help all learners feel supported and included.

Yes, Arina, your are right and wise. We are just a bit provocative. And we will tell pros and cons a bit later, in more detail. We just want to highlight that the trend exists and it is obvious. We say: the goal is NOT to move for Synchro to Asynchro or to record videos instead of FtF meetings. The goal is MAXIMAL engagement and comfortable learning for everyone.

"Employing synchronous teaching methods will help all learners feel supported and included." Exaclty! And many more benefits are still there. But I say "still" :))

Thank you for the video.
The experience of remote teaching throughout these pandemic months confirmed my belief in the benefits of a blended approach. As I come from the English language teaching (Communicative approach) context, I am a dedicated believer in the benefits and values of active learning, when students are constantly involved in the teaching/learning process. So, my big, enthusiastic YES to the asynchronous teaching, however, it is, I believe, reasonable to blend the two so that all the benefits of each are fully explored.
The biggest challenge I am facing now is how to make students' interaction with my course materials more efficient, varied, involving and interesting. Another important aspect - what are the new/effective ways of assessing all the instances of student interaction with the material? I would love to learn as many as possible asynchronous tools of evaluation.

Prof. Leonid Chechurin Teacher
2022 Feb 2 | 23:35

Your thoughts are almost mine. Although I teach math and engineering :) Blended form rulez, no doubt. Let me also provoke a bit: I am sure we both agree that restaurant food is better than MacDonald's, right? I mean... FtF and synchro seem to be more and more a luxury form of teaching. What if you have a chance to teach 1000 students? Would you work 24/7 or limit the amount of participants to 20?.. I will reformulate. Can we think together how to make our our asynchro class as engaging and motivating as FtF?
"what are the new/effective ways of assessing all the instances of student interaction with the material?" - Count count count, the more the better. Statistics of approaching the material can tell a lot. And of cause nicely prepared interaction tools: quizzes, polls, interactive tasks - they can directly tell how the student got what she/he was supposed to. PLUS the statistics of how she/he tried... you can learn a lot out of it.
